Getting Used to Your CPAP: The First Two Weeks

Almost every new CPAP user goes through an adjustment period, and it's normal for the first few nights to feel a bit awkward. Knowing what to expect can make the process much less frustrating.

Nights 1–3: The mask will feel unfamiliar, and you may find yourself waking up to check it or take it off. Try wearing the mask (without the machine running) for short periods during the day — while reading or watching TV — to get used to the sensation before bed.

Nights 4–7: Many patients report their sleep is still lighter than usual during this stretch, but the mask starts to feel less foreign. If the air pressure feels uncomfortable when you first lie down, use the ramp feature, which starts at a lower pressure and gradually increases.

Week 2: This is usually when things click. Most patients notice they're keeping the mask on for longer stretches and waking up less to adjust it. If you're still struggling with leaks or discomfort by this point, it's often a sign the mask size or type needs adjusting rather than a sign CPAP therapy 'isn't working' for you.

A few practical tips: keep the humidifier topped up to prevent a dry mouth or nose, clean your mask cushion every few days, and don't hesitate to reach out if the pressure feels too strong or too weak — small adjustments make a big difference.

Consistency matters more than perfection. Even partial-night use in the early days is progress, and most people find full-night comfort well within the first month.
